1 in 26. Approximately 1 out of 26 people in the United States are diagnosed with epilepsy each year. That is a lot ! So its very surprising to me that epilepsy research is so underfunded and not too many people are of aware of what epilepsy is and how much it affects people who live with this condition. Some people think that people can take medication for seizures and be fine, that is not always the case. There are some people out there that take medication for seizures and live a healthy normal life, then there are others who take several medications for years and still are not seizure free. Imagine having uncontrolled seizures for 20, 30 years, that is what a lot of people who have epilepsy go through, and its really sad to think about. Researchers say about 1/3 of people who have epilepsy continue to have seizures on medication, this is called intractable epilepsy, and this is what my son has. Way too many people suffer with this chronic health condition and a cure needs to be found. Just remember 1 out of 26, its a very high chance you will come into contact with someone who has epilepsy. Please support epilepsy awareness, educate yourself, and learn the first aid for different types of seizures.
